-Spain and Portugal were creating overseas empires during the 1500s
-English explorers began claiming and conquering land overseas in the 1600s

2. British In India
-Trade company built across seas called Bristish East India Company
-Company shaped up Britain's colonial and commercial policies
-They didn't try to conquer any land
-Came into competition with French trade post
-Brittain company became dominate
